A proximity switch is a switch type sensor (i.e. a contactless switch) that can be operated without direct mechanical contact with a moving part. Products are inductive, capacitive, Hall, AC, DC type.

There are Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) types.

A normally open (NO) switch has contacts that are open or disconnected in their unactuated (normal) position. A normally closed (NC) switch has contacts that are closed or connected in their unactuated (normal) position.
